Helpful tips for a healthy retreat

The primary objective of wellness retreats is to improve your health and overall well-being, however you need to be conscious and take preventive measures to avoid injuries or unexpected illness. Knowing the risks and how to prevent them will allow you to focus on the experience at your retreat.

Research your destination

A little research goes a long way toward keeping you healthy! Try to look for information about the destination you would be traveling to. Ideally, you must start your research about the place at least a month ahead. If the trip involves physical exercising then you must also start exercising at least a month or two before the trip.

  • Make sure your routine immunizations are up to date and find out if you need travel-related vaccinations.
  • Try to get as much information as possible about your retreat destination, and potential health risks if you go there. Health risks can differ depending on the season, region of the country, and the type of travel you do.
  • Beauty retreats are often organized at posh resorts, urban hotels, it could also be in remote areas, especially jungle spas. Expect a variety of setting when looking for beauty retreats. Wherever you are, it is important to know how far you will be from a reliable hospital with practitioners who speak your language in case of an emergency. Always carry a first-aid kit.

Food and water

Gastrointestinal illnesses caused by bacteria, viruses, protozoa, and toxins can occur anywhere you travel. You can be exposed to contaminated food and water, poor food handling practices, and lack of proper handwashing and body hygiene. So, ask in advance how food is prepared and served during the retreat. To prevent food-borne illnesses:

  • Eat foods that are well cooked and served hot, and fruits and vegetables that you can peel yourself.
  • Make sure that food is prepared with treated water.

Insurance

Read the fine print of your travel health insurance policy to ensure that you have the appropriate coverage for your trip.

  • Injuries that result from common outdoor activities (like surfing, diving, and camel riding) may not be covered by your policy. Check what activities you would be indulging in your retreat and whether the insurance covers that in case of any emergency.
  • Ensure that you are covered for medical evacuation, particularly if you will be traveling to a remote area or an area where medical care is not easily accessible.
  • Affiliated costs of traveling along with the base cost of retreats can together make it heavier for your pocket. Consider purchasing trip cancellation and interruption coverage in case you need to end your trip sooner than you planned.
  • Keep in mind that your policy will likely not cover you for an illness or injury that results from elective procedures, treatments, or health interventions that you receive abroad (such as an extreme diet, oxygen therapy, or acupuncture).

Traveling with a pre-existing condition

For travelers with a pre-existing condition, retreats can offer a valuable opportunity to focus on healing and improving overall health. So, ensure you are doing these:

  • Consult your healthcare practitioner for advice on managing your condition while you travel. In your next appointment with your physician, discussion your retreat itinerary in detail - food, activities, and the like, so that the physician can understand whether it's suitable for you or not and suggest accordingly.
  • Often beauty retreats involve treatments (especially for improving skin texture, or hair), cosmetic procedures and the like that may interfere with your health or adversely affect it. Moreover, such wellness services may not be make much difference to your health outcomes or could have side effects that can affect your condition.

Five Tips to Help You Thrive Post-Retreat

Here are five post-retreat tips to help you transition back into real life AND maintain that retreat-high long after the retreat closes down.

1. Note down your retreat experience and what you would like to experience in your next retreat

Write your experience, and how you felt about the experience in detail. This will give you clarity about what you would like to try next or whether you would like to repeat it. Giving yourself time to reflect can help to solidify that new knowledge and work out how you might take what you experienced to help you in the future.

Put that piece of paper pinned somewhere you can read every morning. This will help you to keep them on top of mind each day.

2. Try to stick to a written schedule and make it a habit for one month

After you’ve written down your goals, make a written plan for how you will achieve those goals. For example, if you want to follow the skincare routine suggested to you, what exactly are you going to do for those 30 days? Don't miss your schedule; even if you miss one resume from where you left and do this for at least 30 days. They will effortlessly become a part of your lifestyle.

3. Stay connected with fellow people in the retreat

You’re probably not the only one in the same situation. Like you, people who attended the retreat might be feeling the same you do. They may want to extend their pleasant experience from the retreat and one of the most common and effective ways to do so is to keep talking about it and reliving those experiences. Surely they cannot talk to people who did not attend it. So, remain in touch with your fellow retreaters. Share your struggles and your goals. Like this, you can assist one another to make the best of the retreat and also recover from post-retreat blues.

4. Allot time for each of your regular work and stick to it

In order to see any change, you need to put consistent effort in place. This means having a list of goals and things to do. However, we miss the individual deadlines and they add up to the piled-up work. Every work needs to have their respective deadlines; allot a specific deadline to them instead of thinking that you will do it at some point in time. If you don't assign any specific time then it is never likely to happen.

5. Come back to your daily life routine slowly

A solid post-retreat tip is to let the noise in slowly. Resuming your regular lifestyle as soon as you are back from your retreat can make you feel very overwhelmed. This is very likely to happen if you go back to your family which is demanding and chaotic. This is why, it would be wise to take a few more days after the retreat for yourself and spend it in seclusion. You can either extend your retreat or, travel solo, or opt for a staycation.

Reason To Go on a Retreat

A beauty retreat offers more than just a break from the daily grind—it’s an investment in your well-being. There are some more reasons that make beauty retreats worth a try.

To Take Out Time For Yourself

When was the last time you took a break and did something just for you? Taking time for yourself is not only well deserved, it can be essential for your own well-being.

To Recharge in Nature

Reconnecting with the rhythms of the natural world is another wonderful reason to go on a retreat. Being surrounded by the natural world has been shown to reduce stress and anxiety, and to improve mental clarity and emotional balance. Taking part in outdoor activities and spending time in the sun and the fresh air can also improve your physical health.

To Draw Closer to the Divine

Whether it's through sacred rituals, meditation, contemplative walks in nature, or prayer, a retreat provides an excellent environment for spiritual growth and renewal.

To Align with Your Inner-Self

The opportunity for deep introspection and self-reflection is another great reason to go on retreat!

To Improve Your Health

Interestingly, every retreat has health benefits. When you pay more attention to self-care and wellness during the retreat you focus on your healing and change patterns that you were unable to change for a long time. So, as a result, you adopt healthier lifestyles. Moreover, retreat locations often have a therapeutic environment that has a profound effect on your mental and emotional state of being.

To Make New Friends

When you meet new people during the retreats, they may share a lot of things. Among them, you may connect with a few or even one that may give you a heads-up to form a bond. Plus, being away from the distractions of everyday life allows you to really focus on getting to know each other.

To Rest and Rejuvenate

Usually, retreats are organized in places that are enchanting with a tranquil aura. Additionally, meditation and other mindfulness practices in a supportive environment and community create a beautiful setup to rest and rejuvenate. And who doesn’t need a rest? You may feel drained out or tired due to the exhaustion of a vacation but retreats make you feel refreshed and eager to resume your regular life right after the next moment.

To Discover Something About Yourself

Increased self-awareness lies at the heart of personal growth. We can’t change what we can’t see! So learning something new about yourself is another one of the key reasons to go on a retreat.

To Push Past Your Comfort Zone

As humans, we tend to stick with what we know, even if that is not always in our highest good. It’s remarkably easy to live in comfortable discomfort.

Retreats challenge us to push our edges, confront our limiting beliefs, and go beyond what’s easy and usual. Beauty retreats are a level-up with exotic pampering and treatments rejuvenating your body and soul. Don’t be surprised if you shed some healthy tears on a retreat!
