India Sent More Students to the UK Than Any Other Nation

Indian students comprised more than 26% of the non-EU students in 2022-23. India sent most of the students followed by China, Nigeria, and Pakistan.

The United Kingdom has been one of the favourite destinations for international learning. Several other regions are claiming their importance as a learning destination but the UK continues to rank above the rest. As students from multiple nations throng this place for their higher education, have you ever wondered which country sends the most students?

A recent HESA (Higher Education Statistics Agency) report mentioned that the number of international students rose to 759,000. Among these students, most of them were from India, China, and Nigeria. Among the non-EU students who went to the UK, more than 26% of them were Indians.

Around 173,190 students were from India, 154,260 from China, and 72,355 from Nigeria, among others. UK’s immigration laws were changed in 2022 disallowing immigrants to bring their dependants and incorporated other changes that led to unfavourable conditions. It discouraged the inflow of students to the UK ever since then. This is why the increased numbers hold more significance than they usually do.

The UK’s current Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, gave hints to improve the matter, and its Education Secretary, Bridget Phillipson’s statement confirmed that international students are welcome in the UK. However, he also said that the government will manage carefully manage immigration.

Students and practicing professionals are traveling abroad to pursue subjects of their choice, some are building the foundation of their careers while others are enhancing theirs. With several transformations happening in the Indian subcontinent, HESA’s announcement is surely a delight and good enough encouragement for its students.
