Japan is Building Regional Startup Economies to Rise Above Limitations

An effective way to prevent talent drain without creating stagnancy

Of late, a significant percentage of women and younger people are migrating to Tokyo for better work and education opportunities. This trend became a concern for the regions from which people were migrating. In a bid to prevent any imbalance, these regions started to build their startup ecosystems, and it has been paying off well.

The World Economic Forum recently reported that Tokyo has been experiencing growth in its population because of migrating people, mostly women and younger people, for better jobs and education. The report further mentions that to retain talent, different regions of Japan have been creating their own startup ecosystems. Their efforts have worked well so far because it has significantly boosted the regions’ local economies and prevented people from moving elsewhere.

This news is a successful case study for the rest of the world, where brain drain and related demographic shifts have been affecting its potential growth and development.
